In a world increasingly shaped by digital connections and cultural shifts, one thing is becoming strikingly clear: the search for meaning is alive and well—and it’s leading millions to Alpha.

The Alpha course, the internationally recognised Christian programme designed to explore life’s biggest questions through faith, has wrapped up its most successful year since its launch nearly five decades ago. In 2024 alone, more than two million people participated in an Alpha course—a staggering record that cements Alpha’s place as one of today’s most impactful global faith movements.

Alpha has come a long way since humble beginnings in 1977 at Holy Trinity Brompton in London. Originally developed to engage churchgoers in deepening their faith, the course took a major turn in 1990 when the Revd Nicky Gumbel reimagined it specifically for people with little or no connection to church. The rest, as they say, is history.

The Alpha course keeps things simple: shared meals, thought-provoking video content, and honest conversation in small groups. It’s a format that works, whether in a living room in London, a church hall in Nairobi, or a student dorm in São Paulo. Best of all, it’s free to run, making it accessible to communities and churches across the globe.

In 2024, over 81,000 Alpha courses were run across 146 countries, backed by a vibrant network of more than 43,000 churches, organisations, and individuals. That’s not just growth—that’s a movement.

Youth Rising: A New Generation Embraces Faith

Perhaps the most exciting development of 2024 was the launch of the Alpha Youth Series, which debuted in November. In just a few months, more than 250,000 young people from 53 countries engaged with the new content. Moreover, over a third of all Alpha participants last year were under 25; proof that Gen Z is hungry for deeper meaning, spiritual conversation, and community.

“Young people are coming to Alpha not just with questions about religion, but with real, raw life struggles; loneliness, anxiety, mental health issues,” said Miles Toulmin, CEO of Alpha International. “They’re asking, ‘Is there more to life than this? How can I find peace, purpose, and fulfilment in my soul?

According to Toulmin, part of Alpha’s global success lies in its ability to speak to people “in their heart language.” Video resources are carefully contextualised for different cultures and regions, helping the gospel message land in relevant, personal, and real ways.

A Global Shift: Faith on the Rise

Alpha’s remarkable stats come amid what some call a “Quiet Revival,” a slow but steady increase in church attendance, particularly among Gen Z adults in the UK. But the biggest boom came from Africa, where Alpha participants surged by an incredible 47% in just one year.

The signs are clear: while faith might be expressed differently today than fifty years ago, the hunger for spiritual truth is as strong as ever. Alpha’s emphasis on open dialogue rather than dogma makes it a welcoming place for people from all walks of life to explore questions about life, faith, and God; no pressure, no preaching, just conversation.

Alpha’s impact is only accelerating as it prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary in just two years. From bustling cities to rural villages, from young skeptics to lifelong seekers, people worldwide are coming together to ask life’s biggest questions and discover hope that’s changing lives.
